The effect of binaural recording, when used well can be genuinely startling. I first encountered something like binaural recording on "Post War Dream", the opening track from Pink Floyd's Final Cut album. Apparently, this used a system called Holophonics which involved some spurious assertions about how the human hearing system works but it sounds binaural to me.
The frustration with true binaural recording is that while it is very simple to capture (though difficult to capture well), the effect is lost if recordings are played back over loudspeakers. The effect can only be experienced over headphones.
Headphones Get Their Moment
The fact that binaural recordings don't reproduce over speakers used to be their weakness. But these days I would argue that because of mobile devices, we have probably reached the point where as much audio is consumed over headphones as is consumed over speakers. The possibility to reproduce convincing 3D sound using the equipment the majority of people are using already is pretty compelling.
